What to expect at your first acupuncture appointment...

If you've never experienced acupuncture before, you might be wondering what actually happens during a treatment. Perhaps you're curious, a little apprehensive, or simply unsure what to expect. That's completely understandable.

At Bloom Wellness in Sooke, we aim to provide a calm, welcoming space where you can take some time to relax and reconnect with yourself.

Here's a little insight into what you can expect when you come along for your first acupuncture treatment.

Getting to Know You

Your initial appointment is an opportunity for us to get to know one another. We'll spend some time chatting about what has brought you to acupuncture, your health history, lifestyle and what you'd like to get out of your treatments.

In Chinese medicine it's important to look at the bigger picture rather than simply focusing on one particular symptom. Our bodies are constantly responding to the demands of everyday life, and understanding a little more about you helps me tailor your treatment to your individual needs.

This approach gives us a comprehensive base line and allows me to build a treatment approach that is unique to you.

What Is Japanese Style Acupuncture?

At Bloom Wellness, I predominantly practise KMS Japanese Style Acupuncture, which has a rich lineage rooted in traditional Japanese acupuncture, classical Chinese medicine and the clinical work of several influential Japanese masters.

This style uses gentle abdominal palpation and other traditional assessment techniques to help guide the treatment. Every acupuncture point used, earns its place by clearing reflexes found to be active in your body. It is a more somatic style of acupuncture.

Acupuncture needles are much finer than the needles used for injections. You may feel a slight sensation as a needle is inserted, but most people find that treatments are gentle and very relaxing.

During Your Treatment

Once we've discussed your needs, you can settle comfortably on the treatment table. You are asked to either wear loose and movable clothing or disrobe to underwear and relax under the inviting blankets.

Your comfort level is always the priority for treatments and you are always 100% in control.

I'll explain what I'm doing throughout the treatment, and you're always welcome to ask questions or request to stop or adapt anything that you need during the session.

Your comfort is important to me, so please let me know if anything feels uncomfortable.

Depending on your individual needs, your treatment may also incorporate other techniques such as cupping, gua sha or moxibustion. Moxibustion is the burning of a wool like substance from the plant mugwort. It has many benefits and is used often in Japanese acupuncture.

There is no need to do anything other than relax and allow yourself some time to switch off.

How Might You Feel Afterwards?

Everyone responds differently to acupuncture. Some people feel deeply relaxed, while others notice a sense of calm or feel a little more energised. On occassion symptoms can feel more intense for 24 hours after treatment and then fade.

It is very helpful to track how you are responding to treatment and give me any and all feedback as it can help to adapt your treatment plan moving forward.

It's generally a good idea to give yourself a little breathing space after your appointment, drink some water and avoid rushing straight back into a hectic schedule if possible.

A Little Time for Yourself

Every day we're pulled in so many different directions. We wear so many hats, juggle so many roles and sometimes forget to make time for ourselves.

From the moment you walk through my door, my aim is to provide a tranquil, safe space for you to switch off and reconnect with yourself.

Whether you're completely new to acupuncture or have experienced it before, you're very welcome at Bloom Wellness.

If you've been thinking about trying acupuncture, perhaps now is the time to take that first step.
